Large scale air and land search for suspected missing swimmer
Police from Warrnambool and Port Campbell, along with the Southwest rescue helicopter were involved in a three hour search for a suspected missing swimmer at Childers Cove on Wednesday evening.
Police were notified by a tourist walking along the beach, after he noticed a hat, skivvy and a towel on the sand with footprints heading into the water, but none coming back out.
Sergeant Mick Wolfe of Port Fairy Police says a large scale air and land search was conducted, and the water police notified, but the search was called off after police became satisfied no one was missing
Sergeant Wolfe says ‘’the items on the sand, were enough to take the call seriously in case someone had in fact found trouble in the water’’.
He says there were no reports of a missing person in the area, and there was no vehicle at the car park.
Liam Fitzgerald spoke to him shortly after the search wrapped up.
