If you don't know what shakshuka is, you're not alone.
Australians are increasingly unsure of what is on the menu at their local cafe or restaurant, with 74 per cent claiming they've needed to ask wait staff for an explanation.
Some of the most misunderstood items include mirepoix, salmagundi, lardo, and meuniere.
Food journalist Wendy Hargreaves told Tom Elliott world-class restaurants don't need to use fancy terms like that.
"They're not using any of those terms - unless they're in France," she said.
"They're telling people what they're getting and what the ingredients are. If they're not, I think they're try-hards."
